Our Story
Welcome to El Charro de San Francisco Mexican Restaurant, where tradition, family, and authentic flavors come together to create an unforgettable dining experience. Our journey began in 1982 under the name “San Francisco,” and in 1998, the Vázquez and Guzman families took the reins, transforming it into the beloved El Charro de San Francisco that you know today.
A Legacy of Flavor and Tradition
Our roots trace back to the beautiful region of Los Altos de Jalisco, specifically Jesus María, Jalisco, once known as Barrancas de Viudas. Before we became a full-fledged restaurant, we were a humble taqueria. Our father, a seasoned taquero from Mexico, started his culinary career in Mexico City, then moved to Guadalajara, and eventually made his way to Chicago. He ran taco stands in both Mexico City and Guadalajara, perfecting his craft and bringing those cherished recipes to the Windy City.
The Journey of Our Founders
Our uncle, Luis Guzman, played a significant role in shaping our story. He began his journey working in the fields of California, harvesting walnuts and almonds. After settling in McKinley Park, he worked in various loncherías before the era of food trucks. It wasn’t until he joined forces with the family at El Charro de San Francisco that he fully dedicated himself to the restaurant, contributing his expertise and passion to our menu.
Culinary Contributions
Both our father and Uncle Luis brought their unique culinary skills and family recipes to El Charro de San Francisco. They combined their knowledge and love for authentic Mexican cuisine to create a menu that showcases the rich flavors of Jalisco. Our specialties include Tacos al Pastor, Arrachera, and Suadero, each dish prepared with the same dedication and authenticity that has been passed down through generations.
Honoring Our Heritage
Our grandparents participated in the “Bracero Program,” a historical initiative that allowed Mexican laborers to work in the United States. Their hard work and determination laid the foundation for our family’s success, and we honor their legacy through every meal we serve.
A Taste of Home
At El Charro de San Francisco, we strive to bring the essence of Mexico to your table. From our humble beginnings as a taqueria to becoming a cherished restaurant, we are committed to providing an authentic dining experience that celebrates our heritage and the vibrant flavors of Mexican cuisine.
